And as the Ministry of Education, with the support of UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), has made known, at the national level, more than 760 girls in primary school and over 1600 in secondary school became pregnant during the 2014-2015 academic year in Burundi. Even worse, there were 2355 pregnancies discovered in the school environment in the year 2015 alone.

To address the issue of unplanned pregnancies among schoolgirls and prevent future pregnancies, comprehensive measures should be taken. These include implementing comprehensive sexuality education programs in schools, ensuring access to youth-friendly reproductive health services, empowering girls through education, strengthening policy and legal frameworks, conducting community engagement and awareness campaigns, providing supportive counseling and psychosocial services, and engaging boys and men in discussions about gender roles and responsibilities. These holistic and coordinated efforts involve multiple stakeholders and aim to equip young people with knowledge, resources, and support to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
